The Carnival, known as Carnestoltes, is an important festival celebrated in the Grao. The streets of the Grao, the maritime district of Castellón, are filled with different and colourful fancy dress costumes. This enjoyable and fun festival is celebrated every February.
Kids and grown ups enjoy the festival in the Grao and they fill the streets celebrating among neighbours and visitors. On Saturday morning there are activities for children, where the little ones can play and have fun, while in the evening/night the fun starts for the grown ups. The Carnival parade runs through the streets of the Grao. The costumes are made by the residents with a great sense of imagination and sense of humour.
On Sunday they celebrate the “Entierro de la Sardina” (the burial of the sardine) which is the farewell of the festival. The Grao is already thinking about next year’s Carnival, a very traditional and important festival in this area of Castellón.
