The nature reserve of the Desert de les Palmes (Desert of the Palms) includes part of the municipality of Castellón and extends through neighboring areas. It is an old Carmelite wasteland, located in the coastal foothills that have the same name. Its main appeal is its natural environment (declared a natural park in 1989), its magnificent views from the top of the hills and the existing religious buildings.
There is a group of religious buildings that is situated around 500 metres above sea level in the heart of the reserve. The old convent, today in ruins yet full of romantic flavor, was constructed in the 17th century and is very near the 18th century convent, which is currently inhabited. In addition, one can visit the chapels, some of them in ruins and others in good shape, that are spread across the conventual lands and that in the past served as places of seclusion and prayer for the religious and faithful that went to the Desert.
El Desert de les Palmes is a real treat for the senses: exceptional views, a Mediterranean forest with native flora and fauna, mountainous formations… a true lung for the city. The Desert’s visitors have the opportunity to go hiking or simply to walk through the lush groves, while they observe the past and present monastic life of the Carmelite priests.
For more information on the cultural and natural wealth of the Desert de les Palmes, there is a Visitors Center, located in La Bartola.
Although it is advisable to set aside a few hours to walk through the reserve, driving through it is also gratifying. At its center is the current monastery, where you can find a restaurant and the best views of the sea and of the mountain. From there, on clear a day, when you look out on the horizon you can see another protected reserve that is part of the municipality of Castellón: The Columbretes Islands.
Driving directions: Exit Castellón to the north (next to Hospital General) and access the old Nacional 340. Go about 4 kilometres and after passing the access for the A-7 and the new Nacional 340, you will come to a roundabout. At the roundabout, follow the indications towards the Desert highway. This is the beginning of the park.
