Main Theatre

Main Theatre It was inaugurated in 1894 with a performance of "The Guardian Angel” and its first cinematographic projection took place in 1896.

The Main Theater is included in the group of innovations carried out in Castellón at the end of the 19th century, during the city’s period of strong urban development. Castellón needed certain public services in accordance with the times and the realization that culture is an asset that helps the growth of the city and its inhabitants. This building became one of the symbols of 19th and 20th century Castellón.

Today, after a complete structural restoration, the original Italian-style theatre configuration, the magnificent paintings that adorn the hall’s ceiling and proscenium arch as well as the curtain have been restored. The Main Theater puts on a large variety of productions and performances in order to satisfy the performing arts lover’s demand: classical plays, avant-garde and transgressive performances, dance shows…and also exhibitions, seminars and encounters with those that intend to energize the cultural debate around the performing arts world.

The Main Theater of Castellón reopened its doors in November of 1999. The recovery of such a symbolic and culturally representative building has been one of the main objectives of “Castelló Cultural” (a management committee) since its founding. The theatre’s restoration was one of the committee’s biggest gambles but without a doubt it has resulted in the beautification of the center of the city and its surroundings.
